This archival photography project explores the loss of governance autonomy in Chongming Island, a suburban region of Shanghai after the island experienced the impacts of environmental protection policies and capital development in the late 2010s. As a result, local residents are facing the challenges of economic backwardness and land waste. The project uses field research, direct photography, and interactive publications to reveal the formalistic development and bridge-burning beautification of the region by the local government and foreign capital. These actions appear to conform to nature, but in reality, they are dismantling and transforming it.
